Erasure? Conversations on Graffiti (+updates)

ERASURE? Conversations On Graffiti Is graffiti art or crime? Vandalism or beautification? What is the connection between gang related activities and graffiti culture? What is good graffiti and what is bad? These are questions we'd like to address at the first large scale project of TheStoreFront Community that will take place on Saturday September 20. Property owners around the GTA, a few in our own n… Continue

Volunteer Weekend (May 31, June 1)

Greetings again! I wanted to remind you of the volunteer weekend this Saturday and Sunday for cleaning. Please try not to come empty handed. I'm sure there is something lying around your place we can use. Think of it as a community potluck, but take the food out and replace it with a "thing". Hmm..actually if you want to bring food that's fine with me. To do list: - clean the bathroom for one thing so it's approachable, and toss the junk that's in the basement. I know it'll be dirty work but… Continue

I finally have the key!

TheStoreFront is here! 957 Bloor St. West I have the key and now we need to begin the cleaning. If you go to the website, you'll see the photos I took of the place. We need cleaning equipment so if anyone can lend or donate anything to help with the materials, to help clean what you see in the images, I would highly appreciate it. There is a furnished basement downstairs that needs a whole lot of work. For cleaning here are some things on the top of my head of what we need: - mops + buckets… Continue

Without them...

I want to give a big thank you to TIM HACKBORN from Christie Ossington Neighbourhood Centre who took time out of his day to take me around the neighbourhood a few months ago, to talk about TheStoreFront. It's through dedication and random social interactions that your intentions get caught by someone else who can help you move a step forward. I'd also like to thank JOE PERKETA who owns Bloor / Dovercourt Appliances, the store beside where TheStoreFront will be. He called over his… Continue

957 Bloor West, YES!

People, We are moving forward. May 15th looks like is going to be the day for moving in. The place is at 957 Bloor West (at Dovercourt, right across Shoppers Drug Mart). Robert Markovitz is the landowner who has been generous enough to give us a 4 month reduced rent. The lease is being signed by Rafael Gomez, ThinTankToronto, who has partnered with OCAD, but OCAD is paying the rent (through a seed money that I got from the president). I'm telling you this because I want you to spread the wor… Continue

Aiming for May

It's been a while since I've updated everyone on what's going on. All you need to know is that TheStoreFront is happening. Our location will be at 957 Bloor West, right across the Shoppers Drug Mart, beside Bloor/Dovercourt Appliances. Lots of negotiations needed to be made so now we're moving forward. OCAD Think Tank is partnering with Think Tank Toronto http://thinktanktoronto.ca. TheStoreFront is an OCAD initiative in the west end, alike TTT's 54East Studio in the east end. I have high hop… Continue

11.23.07 Part2 random interview: Ashanti Room

This beautiful store closed in December but I'll never forget its warmth and coziness. It represents a strong culture for this area and I hope another store in the future carries its legacy. Here is part 2 of the random interviews on this day.

01.10.08 Cameron Sinclair with students in open-studio at OCAD

Cameron Sinclair was a lecture speaker in January at OCAD. The following day Bruce Hinds invited him for a roundtable discussion in the open-studio. The audio begins with Bruce Hinds talking about Bruce Sterling's time with the students when he was invited for a lecture at OCAD the previous year. I didn't post this in January because I didn't think it was that relevant to this project. But now, I want everyone… Continue

03.03.08 My second visit to the incredible CONC

I went to Christie Ossington Centre today to talk to Javid, the youth outreach coordinator of LOFT, whom I had touched base with the last time I came to visit. I went down to the basement, where they work out of. There was one guy who was singing and recording music and another guy who I saw last time as well. It is a free studio! I still can't believe it. Young people can come in and record; it's incredible. I talked to Robert the coordinator of LOFT and told him about what I had accomplished… Continue
